Agra village that banks on postal department - NEWS

Agra: Pusaita village of Iradatnagar, near UP-Rajasthan border, in Agra district has become country's first hamlet to have at least one member of a family with savings account under various scheme of postal department. The hamlet comprises 250 families. 


Also, as per the postal department, Karishma Singh, daughter of Nawab Singh, born on April 30 became second youngest girl to have Sukanya Samridhi Yojana savings deposit in her name, and that within half an hour of her birth.

The first youngest girl, Ankit Kashyap, also hails from Agra and was born on May 29. 

"Nearly 30 km from main Agra city, Pusaita has become country's first village, where all the families have registered an account for themselves to save their cash amount in post office," confirmed senior superintendent of post office Agra division, Satish Solanki.

He said, "Under the Har Dar Har Parivar initiative, postal department is offering to save money under various scheme such as Grameen Daak Jeevan Bima, savings account, Savida Jama Yojana, Sukanya Samridhi Yojana and several others."

The Central government's Sukanya Samridhi Yojna introduced on January 22, is a big hit in Agra. In just three months, general post office (GPO) of Agra has topped the chart in Uttar Pradesh for the opening of maximum number of special bank accounts for girl child.

The small deposit scheme, focuses on empowering girl by encouraging parents to open bank accounts in the name of their newborn daughters.

By April 18, savings accounts under Sukanya Samridhi Yojna had crossed more than 63,500 in Agra.

As per the scheme, the parents of a girl child can open an account for her from the day of her birth to the day she turns 10. The account can be activated with a minimum deposit of Rs 1,000 and a maximum amount of Rs 1.5 lakh can be deposited in it in a financial year.
